"What we should be competitive in is our standard of living. Attractive rural areas are built on quality of life, not cheap wages." -- Richard Levins, professor emeritus of applied economics at the University of Minnesota from "Unions are good for rural communities." "We may win this fight, we may lose this fight, but we will make this fight." – John Burton, California Democratic Party chairman Friends, The governor’s latest proposed budget contains severe cuts that will devastate millions of poor and middle-class Californians, shred the safety net and stunt California’s economic recovery. As Democrats, we stand firmly against the severity of the cuts and we will do everything possible to minimize the cuts and the harm they will inflict. We thank legislative Democrats for standing firm and doing what they can to lessen these harsh cuts. Meanwhile, obstructionist Republicans would rather defend tax breaks for oil companies and big business than keep kids insured and allow the frail elderly to remain in their homes. California’s budget must reflect the services we all need and how to pay for them. Californians need a balanced budget solution that includes revenue increases along with cuts. Now, it’s our turn to speak out. Join me in telling lawmakers that we must Protect All Californians, Stop the Severe Cuts and Support a Balanced Solution! Peace and friendship, ![]() John Burton, Chair, CA Democratic Party Lungren Tops Democratic Target List Comment on this at California Notes Yesterday, The Hill published a great article by Jeremy P. Jacobs on the 3rd Congressional District. It focuses mainly on Dan Lungren, but fairly lays out the campaign as it develops on both sides. Jacobs noted something I said a while back, and though things have changed since then this still applies. Democrats hope they don’t have too much of a good thing and can avoid a contentious primary.Unfortunately, that doesn’t look like it will happen. All three candidates are in it to win, and my take is the primary will be surprisingly contentious. But the bulk of the article focuses on Lungren and his vulnerability. Democrats are focusing on Lungren, whose vulnerability, they argue, lies in numbers.Numbers like earning the “lowest percentage of the vote of any California Republican last year,” and the registration shift. Asked if Lungren is the most at-risk Republican in the Golden State, Allan Hoffenblum, the publisher of the California Target Book, said flatly, “Yes.?” When the district lines were drawn in 2002, the registration was 45 percent Republican, 34 percent Democratic and 13 percent declined to state,” Hoffenblum, said. “This year it is 40 percent GOP, 38 percent Dem and 18 percent [declined to state]. This is a Sacramento suburban area that is trending Democratic.”Anyone with any interest in CA-03 and the target that is Dan Lungren should read this article.
