Believe it or not, one of the most exciting down ballot local races to watch this election season may be for the Amador Co. School Board. The school board and superintendent in Amador woefully unqualified and in over their heads. To top it off, their ineptitude has embroiled them in a discrimination case that may result in a Department of Justice investigation. They are helplessly stuck in the past. And I don’t mean the recent past, like the 80’s or 90’s, but back in the 60’s – in the deep south, before civil rights. They are so far out of touch that at a recent board meeting Barry Broad, an attorney who represents the Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region was quoted as telling the board,

“You may think you can do whatever you want because you’re out here in Amador County, but I’m afraid you also belong to the wide, wide world – and the rules that apply there also apply to you. I feel like introducing myself by saying, ‘hello, I’m visiting this board tonight from the United States of America.’”

Assemblymember Alyson Huber (D-El Dorado Hills) today delivered 2000 postcards to the Governor's office. The postcards are from Delta residents who are opposed to Governor Schwarzenegger’s plan to build a peripheral canal.

"I have heard from my constituents – residents of the Delta region – and they have said loud and clear they oppose the construction of a peripheral canal," said Assemblymember Alyson Huber. "The Governor showed how out of touch he is with my communities when, just hours after the water package was passed, he touted his plans to build a canal through the Delta at a business event in Stockton. He just doesn't get it - he might as well walk into a Giant's game wearing a Dodger jersey."

The Governor's spokesperson, who came to accept the postcards, answered with a clear "yes" when asked by reporters if the Governor does in fact have plans to build a canal.

As the Governor signs the bills in the water package passed by the legislature, Assemblymember Huber wants to remind the Governor of the strong opposition to his canal plan by Delta residents. These residents will not stand aside while the Governor and his Southern California water buddies bulldoze their way through the Delta.

Assemblymember Huber opposed the water package because it creates a new layer of bureaucrats who will make decisions on water that will impact the communities in her district, including the details of a canal. To counteract proposals to give all authority to a group of unelected appointees, Huber offered up a simple bill (AB 13 7x) one to require a full analysis of the peripheral canal and require legislative approval – a common sense approach.  The bill was killed without a hearing. Huber plans to resubmit the bill in the coming weeks.

Health Care

Saturday was an historic day. Not only did it see the passage of health care reform in the House of Representatives by a 220 – 215 vote, but it was the day that Representative John Garamendi gave his first speech on the floor of the House as a member of the House. Garamendi, California’s first State Insurance Commissioner, also proudly cast one of his first votes in Congress for the Affordable Health Care Act for America, H.R. 3962.

“This is the most important vote of my public policy career,” Rep. Garamendi said.

The Affordable Health Care for America Act will provide every American citizen access to quality, affordable patient-centered health care—while reducing the deficit and lowering costs—instead of leaving Americans at the mercy of a health insurance industry calling the shots and rationing our health care. The bill must now be merged with legislation under consideration in the U.S. Senate.

“The bill has strong comprehensive insurance reform and creates the penultimate enforcement mechanism — The public option — that in its fullness would allow all of us to walk away from the clutches of the profit before people private insurance companies whose first operating commandment is ‘Pay as little as late as possible,’” Garamendi said in his speech.

CA Democratic Party

"The last thing Californians need in a U.S. Senator is a failed CEO who was fired by her last employer after taking $100 million for herself.

"In these tough times, hard-working Californians need a Senator who will fight to create jobs, not a millionaire former executive who laid off more than 28,000 Americans and shipped jobs overseas.

"Carly Fiorina may have millions to spend on a Senatorial race, but Californians will not be snookered by yet another millionaire neophyte in search of a new hobby.

"Maybe Fiorina’s ill-advised run for Senate will finally inspire her to take the time to vote.

"Senator Boxer and the California Democratic Party will be ready for Assemblymember Chuck DeVore, Fiorina or whoever wins the Republican primary in 2010."
